!AKRON HIGH COMMENCEMENT: An Immense Audience Greets Graduates Abram P. Mease and Robert Ruppin: For the First Time in School's History Tie for Valedictory Honors. Deliver Splendid Orations. The tenth annual commencement of the Akron High School was held in the Fire Company Hall on Friday evening. At 7 o'clock the members of the Class of 1914, the members of the Alumni Association, as well as the Board of Education, met at the house of Carpenter Zwalley, from which they proceeded in a body to the hall, where they were greeted by the largest crowd that has ever gathered together on a similar occasion in this borough. To the beautiful strains of music furnished by Fahrbach's Orchestra, they marched to their respective places on the rostrum. The decorations were profuse, most beautiful in fact, and they were the embodiment of unusual taste. There was another selection by the orchestra, following which the valedictory orations were delivered by Messrs. Abram P. Mease and Robert Ruppin. For the first time in the history of the Akron High School, it had been necessary to call the two leading members of a class tie, and in addition to this, it is perhaps only fair to these two young men to state that they have not only graduated with the highest averages that had ever been made in Akron schools, but have also established precedents which may not be equalled in many years. Mr. Mease, the first speaker, chose for his subject the "Price of Success." The desire for success in the world is not for its uses, he asserted. It has doubtless been implanted in the human heart for good rather than for evil purposes. Indeed, the desire to accumulate and excel focus one of the most powerful instruments for the regeneration of society. It provides the basis for individual energy and activity; it is the beginning of maritime and commercial enterprise, and it is the foundation of industry as well as independence. By it men are impelled to labor and invent. No idle person ever became great. It is among those men who have lost no movement that we find the men who have moved and advanced the world. Labor of some sort is one of the conditions of success. The thought has come down to us from pagan times that labor is the price which the gods have set upon all that is excellent. This thought is also worthy of Christian times. We all admit, though we often forget, the marvelous power of perseverance, and yet all nature is continually pressing this lesson upon us. Emerson reminds those entering life that "The angels that live with them and are weaving laurels for their youthful brows are toil and truth and mutual faith." While we are attempting to succeed we must remember that in whatever sphere our duty lies we must mainly rely upon ourselves. Others can help us, but what we desire to be we must make ourselves. No one can see for us or know what our insides of life are but ourselves. To profit by our advantages we must learn to use for ourselves "the dark lantern of the spirit which none can see by but he who bears it." The world is ever with us, but what sort of a world it will be for us depends greatly upon ourselves. Everybody's first duty is to improve and educate himself, and at the same time, help others along. Every person has within himself the ability of free will and free action to a large extent. By this ability men, to whom the name genius has been attributed, have successfully defeated and overcome the adverse circumstances of life in which they have been placed. By it they have risen from poverty and social debasement as if to show what energetic men, resolute of purpose, can do for their own elevation in the advancement of the world. After the valedictory orations were delivered, a very able address was given by the head of the Department of English in Albright College. The orchestra then rendered another selection, after which the president of the board, Mr. P. D. Getz, presented the diplomas to the members of the class with very fitting and well-chosen remarks. The benediction was then delivered by Rev. H. J. Kline. From the Lancaster New Era, Wednesday, April 29, 1914.
