!HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY: Mrs. Mary Mease is Lancashire Hall's Resident of the month for the merry month of May 1991. Mary has been a resident at Lancashire Hall since January 2,1991 and presently resides in room 403B on Farmer Wing. Mary was born on December 6, 1901 at Hunsicker Mill, near Leola. She is the daughter of the late Emanuel and Elizabeth Hemling Bixler. Mary was the youngest of three children. She has a brother, Michael, who died as a child, and a brother John, who died several years ago at the age of 89. Mary was the "baby" in the family, her brother John was sixteen years old and out on his own when Mary was born. Mary attended primary school at the Snake Hill Elementary School, and graduated from Upper Leacock High School in 1919. While in school, she earned the nickname "Miss a Bix". One of her favorite girlhood activities was ice skating on Ressler's Dam near Leacock. She made the switch from hockey to figure skates with ease. But she did recall an incident when she was about 18, when she had taken a good spill. She said "there wasn't one star in the sky that I didn't see." After high school, Mary first went to work at Stehli's Silk Mill in Lancaster. She worked there for five years before going to the Eby Shoe Factory in Lititz. After five years at Eby's she started working at the Badorf Shoe Factory where she continued working for the next thirty years. Mary met her husband, Abram Mease, on a blind date. The couple went together for six years and were married on May 5, 1923 at Neffsville by the Rev. Noah Landis, a Mennonite preacher. The couple's first home was a little farm outside of Lititz. She lived most of her life at 215 N. Broad St. in Lititz. The couple had one son, Raymond. Mary also has two grandchildren, Marie and John. Mary's husband was a school teacher when she married him, but he also had a garage, a welding business, and an automobile dealership. It was good that he was in the auto business, because Mary says that "my automobile was first in my life." She drove her "Cadillac" all over the United States. Mary indicated that her husband navigated and she drove during their many "road trips." When asked if she ever had a speeding ticket, she indicated that a policeman stopped her on a bridge in Harrisburg and pulled her over for speeding, but she told him that she was just keeping up with everybody else and she talked him out of it. She went on to say that the policeman was a "nice young man." Besides working, caring for her family, and driving, Mary managed to be involved in many civic organizations. She held president posts in the Litiz Fire Company Auxillary and also the Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital's Ladies' Auxillary. She also belonged to the ladies' chapter of the Oddfellow Lodge and the Lititz Senior Citizens. Mary also had a potato chip business for several years. Mary has been a widow since June of 1980, but she has remained very busy "running around" all over Lancaster County. Mary is also a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lititz. Mary has continued to maintain her busy lifestyle at Lancashire Hall. We'd like to thank her for allowing us to get to know her a little bit better. We also would like to congratulate her on being our May Resident of the Month. From the Lancashire Hall Newsletter, Vol. 1 Number 5, May 1991.
