Parents of 7 children-5 still living: Ella (wife of E.P.Keith)of Ida Grove Iowa, George P, William L of Tipton Iowa, Arthur L of Westbrook MNand Burdette V of South Dakota. Wife died about 50 years old in Cedar County.HPS died Ida Grove at the age of seventy five.
FROM: Obituary in Newspaper, no date Henry F. Swartz, veteran soldier and pioneer citizen, died at his home onGreen Street Tuesday afternoon, March 1st, at the age of 75 years and 10days. Born in Union County, PA, February 21, 1829, Mr. Swartz marriedEliza Koch October 7, 1851 and to this union seven children were born.Two of the children died in infancy and there are still living Mrs. EllaF. Keith of this city, George P. Swartz of Henrietta, MN, A.L. Swartz ofJefferies, MN, B.V. Swartz, Huron Lake, MN and Wm J. Swartz of Tipton.Deceased served in Company F, Tenth Iowa, enlisting in '62 and had anexcellent record. Mrs. Eliza Swartz, his wife, died Oct 5, 1884 atTipton. In 1892 Mr. Swartz married Mrs. Susan Swartz of PA. In 1856 Mr.Swartz moved to Clinton County where he resided until he enlisted. Afterthe war he moved to Cedar county in '69 where he lived until the springof '88 when he moved to Ida county where he has resided ever since. Theremains were taken to Tipton yesterday where he will be buried by theside of his first wife. There were short services at the house conductedby the GAR and the body was taken on the evening traing to Tipton, E. P.Keith and Mrs. Swartz accompanying. The family wish to extend theirthanks to the GAR and to the friends and neighbors for their kindness andsympathy.
FROM: Obituary in Newspaper. n.d. Henry P. Swartz was born in Union County PA Feb 21, 1829 and died in IdaGrove, Iowa March 1, 1904. Aged 75 years and 9 days He was married inMilton, PA Oct 7 1851 to Miss Eliza Koch and the family came west in1856, first settling in Clinton IA where most of their children wereborn. In 1869 they came to Cedar County and lived for about 21 years northeast of tipton.His wife died Nov. 5 1883. In 1890 he took up his residence in Ida county and in 1892 married again. His brother's widow then living at Milton PA becoming the sharer of his joys and sorrows. Their home has been in Ida county except during the winter of 1901-02 when they spent a season with theirson Mr. William Swartz of Tipton. Mr. Swartz had been a soldier, havingenlisted in Co F 10th Iowa National Infantry Sep 22 1862 and served 28months. He was honorably discharged from the service at Washington May 16, 1865. Thesickness which only terminated with his decease might be said to startwith a stroke of paralysis which he received Oct. 7 1899. From this herallied somewhat underthe best care and attention that loving friendscould give him and was able to walk around with some assistance at leastpart of the time until Thus. Feb 18 when he was compelled to take his bedand after lingering for almost two weeks, passed away about 2 pm lastThursday. There remain to mourn, besides his circle of old comrades and friends,his wife and five children, Mrs. Ella Keith of Ida Grove, George of Minnesota, W Jof Tipton, Arthur L of Minnesota. Of these only one, W J was present to paythe last sad rites to a departed father. The body was brought to TiptonThursday morning and funeral services held in the Reformed church at 2:30in the afternoon from which the remains were taked to Masonic Cemetaryand laid to rest by the GAR of which he was a member.
FROM: History of of Cottonwood & Watonwan Counties, MN 1916 John A. Brown, ed. V. 2 p.164-5 Henry & Eliza Koch Swartz, natives of Pennsylvania came west in 1852.Settled in Clinton County IA. Henry was a carpenter by trade but spentmost of his life farming. During the civil war he served as a private inCompany F, Tenth Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, attached to the 15thArmy Corps, and during all his service was never wounded or takenprisoner. In 1868 he and his family moved from Clinton County to CedarCounty Iowa. Mrs. Swartz died there in 1883. Henry spent his last days inIda county and died in 1906. He and his wife were members of the Germanreform church and their children were reared in that faith. 7 children:First two died in infancy, Ella F, died 1915, George, Peter, Arthur,William J. and Burdette.

Onthis 4th day of April, 1891, personally appeared before me a notary public in andfor Ida County and state aforesaid duly authorzied to administer oaths HenrySwartz aged 62 years a resident of Logan township, Ida County, State of Iowa, who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Henry Swartz who was enrolled on the 22nd day of September 1864, in company F, private, in the 10th regiment of iowa Veterans Infantry Vol. in the warof the rebellion and served more than ninety days in the service of the UnitedStates and was honorably discharged at Washington City DC on the 30th day of May1865. By reason of the expiration of service. That he is now, two ? ofthe time unable to earn a support by manual labor by reason of rheumatism andpains in neck, shoulders and spine so that he cannot use or exert hisarms in working lifting and all such labor. that said disabilities arenot due to his vicious habits and are to the best of his knowledge andbelief ? of of ? ten years standing that he has never before applied fora pension under any pensions law and is not drawing any pension that hemakes this declaration for the purpose of being placed upong the pensionrolls of the United States under the act of June 27, 1890. That she had been previously married to John D. Swartz, on the11th day of March 1856. That applicant's name before her marriage to JohnD. Swartz was Susan F. Billiet. That said John D. Swartz died on the 25thday of July. 1885. That her husband Henry P. Swartz had been previouslymarried to Eliza Koch at Milton Northcumberland County, Pennsylvania whodied on the 5th day of November 1883 at Tipton Cedar County State ofIowa.
