Cause of fatal Weymouth fire still unknown
Weymouth, April 16- The cause of a fire that killed an 80-year-old South Weymouth man while demolishing his home saturday night remained undetermined today, pending a report from the state fire marshal 's office.
Home gutted
Fire chief Walter R. Murray said no cause could be officially listed as yet for the blaze in which the life of Jacob Meese of Forest Street, South Weymouth, was snuffed out. The two-story home was gutted despite the efforts of firemen during a long battle. Meese, a retured cigar manufacturer, was found dead in his first floor bedroom where he had been sleeping. The only other occupant of the home, Frank Welch, 70, who lived upstairs, told authorities he tried to rouse Meese when he detected the fire, but smoke and flames prevented him from entering the room. Welch escaped unharmed and ran to summon firemen. Welch said he was first awakened by smoke and rushed downstairs in his futile effort to save Meese.
